($170) Deep, saturated ruby. Intensely spicy aromas of blackberry, bitter cherry, tobacco and minerals, with a complicating note of black pepper that became more pronounced with air. This is quite fresh and lively for the vintage, showing tangy red and dark berry flavors and a solid, chewy texture. Finishes with considerable finesse.

Wine was double decanted 2 hours before.
This was compared to Chapoutier Ermitage Le Pavillon 1997 and 1998 Scrio (Syrah from Bolgheri). The La Chapelle showed very well with its trademark pepper nose. There is a delicate sweetness that is well balanced with acidity, and the wine has good structure. The mid-palate is intense, fat and succulent.
