($110) Good full ruby. Black cherry, blackcurrant, dusty licorice and a whiff of herbs on the nose. Then sweet and supple but cooler than the 2004 in its fruit character, with some mint and herbal nuances. Finishes with broad tannins and a suggestion of bitter chocolate. Today this seems a bit less sweet than the 2003 merlot, but these tannins are finer.

This is a gorgeously opulent, complex, profound blend of 86% Cabernet Sauvignon, 6% Merlot and the rest Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot and Malbec (15.1% alcohol) from Jayson Pahlmeyer and his brilliant winemaking sidekick, Erin Green. Pahlmeyer-s wines, first made by Helen Turley, continue to go from strength to strength. This nearly fully mature 2003 possesses deep, rich black currant fruit notes intermixed with hints of white chocolate, spice box, flowers and subtle background oak. Rich, authoritative and full-bodied, it should last for another decade, but why wait?

Plump and generous, with fleshy currant, blackberry and black cherry fruit that's supple and focused. Ripe without going overboard. Finishes with a burst of sweet ripe currant and blackberry fruit and ripe tannins. 4,739 cases made.

beautiful deep ruby red, soft nose of berries, cassis and leather, soft tannins which become much larger after about 2 1/2 hours, with a long persistent finish. A really nice wine to drink over the next 10 years.

About This Producer


Pahlmeyer started over 20 years ago when former trial attorney Jayson Pahlmeyer decided to turn his passion for wine into a career in Napa Valley. After studying viticulture and oenology at the University of Bordeaux, Pahlmeyer returned to the United States and produced his first wine (a Bordeaux blend) in 1986. Under the guidance of Pahlmyer, and current winemaker Erin Green, this reputation endures, annually establishing the estate as one of the finest producers of Bordeaux blends, Merlot, and Chardonnay in California.
