($250; 15.9% alcohol) Full red-ruby. Superripe aromas of plum, mocha, tobacco, caramel and truffle, with a hint of roasted fruits. Thick and voluptuous, with superconcentrated flavors of plum, truffle and mocha. This offers rare sweetness and opulence with just enough mid-palate energy to maintain its shape. Finishes with very suave, lush tannins and lingering notes of caramel and mocha. This one is just this side of too much, with aromas that began almost oxidative, and yet the wine became fresher with extended time in the recorked bottle without any loss of sweetness. A rather extreme vintage in the context of Hundred Acre, but a wine of extravagant breadth and richness.

The sensational 2003 Cabernet Sauvignon Kayli Morgan Vineyard (100% varietal) is a candidate for wine of the vintage. Although it came in at 15.9% alcohol, it is not the least bit hot or out of balance. The wine boasts glorious levels of creme de cassis fruit and licorice that combine to form the background of a perfumed, aromatic wine with full-bodied richness, a voluptuous texture and both hedonistic and intellectual appeal that are sine qua non. This sensational Cabernet Sauvignon seems velvety, but every one of Woodbridge's wines that I have tasted is velvety from infancy. Yet they age and age as the 2000, a far from ideal vintage, has proven time after time. There is always a Pomerol-like silky texture to these wines, despite the fact they are 100% Cabernet Sauvignon. The 2003 is a titanic wine that can be drunk now or in 20 years given the genius of Jayson Woodbridge.

Bold, ripe and expressive, with tiers of currant, blackberry, espresso and toasty oak that are exceptionally well done in this style. Superripe, verging on Porty. Some will find the flavors too ripe and that the heat on the finish pushes the tannins. 1,100 cases made.

Huge. Dark purple color with a nose of graphite and cassis. Palate staining ripe fruit and tannins are surprisingly balanced given the level of alcohol, this drinks nicely after two hours of air. I expect it will continue to improve.

Enjoyed at our wine tasting. Nose full of super ripe blackberries, plums, and definite caramel. Beautifully body that was silky smooth and multiple layers of toasty vanillan, black fruits, those small Brach's square caramels, and beautiful sweet tannins. The finish lasted in the mouth for a full minute and a half. This was hands down the winner of the evening. A stunning wine.

About This Producer


In 1998 Jayson Woodbridge released his first vintage, one Cabernet, made from his own 10-acre Kayli Morgan Vineyard. The goal was to create a "Right Bank" style Cabernet from those clay soils. With the second vintage, he earned scores in the mid-90s and sold the wine for double the previous vintage. In addition to the Cabernet Sauvignon Kayli Morgan Vineyard, Woodbridge produces a Howell Mountain Cabernet from The Ark Vineyard and a single-vineyard Shiraz from his Ancient Way Vineyard in Barossa Valley.
