($290-$380) Deep ruby-red. The freshest on the nose of the 2003s at this address, offering slightly high-toned smoky raspberry, minerals and graphite and a suggestion of medicinal austerity. Offers great breadth and early charm, but also possesses very firm underlying structure. Finishes with big, ripe tannins and outstanding grip and length.

Even better, and clearly the best wine made in the Haut-Brion stable in 2003 (the last vintage of the great Jean-Bernard Delmas as administrator), the 2003 Haut-Brion is a blend of 58% Merlot, 31% Cabernet Sauvignon and 11% Cabernet Franc that hit 13% natural alcohol, which seemed high at the time, but given more recent vintages is modest. Dark ruby/plum in color, with no amber or orange at the edge, the wine exhibits an abundance of roasted herbs, hot rocks, black currants, plum, and balsamic notes. Quite rich, medium to full-bodied and more complete, with sweeter tannins than La Mission Haut-Brion, this full-bodied Haut-Brion has hit full maturity, where it should stay for at least a decade. Bravo!

Complex aromas of black licorice, tobacco and cedar with red fruits. Full-bodied, with superseductive, silky tannins, loads of fruit and a finish that lasts for minutes. A beauty in all the sense of the word. 10,000 cases made.

Dark ruby red with deep core. Lovely elegant floral nose with vibrant rose petal aromas, blackcurrant and wet-stone minerality. Unlike the nose this is a dense ball of flavour with dry grippy tannins. The floral flavours are still there, but are backed up with blackcurrant fruit, burnt toffee and flinty characteristics.

About This Producer

Since its founding in 1525, Chateau Haut-Brion has passed between many illustrious owners, including admirals, archbishops, and mayors of Bordeaux. In recent years, the estate has come under the ownership of Clarence Douglas Dillon, Ambassador of the United States in Paris and Minister of Finance under President John F. Kennedy, making it the only American-owned First Growth property. Currently, Dillon's granddaughter, the Duchesse de Mouchy, oversees Haut-Brion, among many others, under the public limited company of "Domaine Clarence Dillon."

Chateau Haut-Brion is also the only First Growth property from the 1855 Classification that lies outside of the Medoc and Sauternes. Located in Pessac, within the Graves region, just one mile from the city of Bordeaux, the wine of Chateau Haut-Brion is highly sought-after, landing it among the most expensive and prestigious wines in France. The estate vineyards, dominated by gravel and clay, are planted to both red and white varietals: Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc; and Semillon and Sauvignon Blanc. Haut-Brion is characterized by earthy scents, ripe fruit, tobacco and mineral, revealing aromas of chocolate and smoke and creating an elegant and harmonious wine that is highly structured, allowing it to age seamlessly.
