Medium ruby. Bright red fruit aromas with hints of salt and underbrush. The palate starts with real sweetness, with fine, light red fruit flavors framed and lifted by lively acids. Elegant and very fresh: though some might wish for more power, this is a paradigm of elegant sangiovese.

The 2003 Fontalloro (100% Sangiovese) is perhaps slightly weightier and fresher than the Rancia. Made in a more flashy and opulent style, it exhibits a primary quality to its super-ripe red fruit, with notable intensity on the palate and plenty of grip on the finish. It will benefit from several years of cellaring to integrate its new oak. Fontalloro is made from a combination of vineyards located in both the Chianti Classico and Colli Senesi appellations. The presence of sand in the latter terroir gives Fontalloro its more open personality.

Very pretty blackberry and vanilla aromas follow through to a full-bodied palate, with fine tannins and a mineral and berry aftertaste. Structured. Sangiovese. 2,900 cases made.

Dark fruit, fairly smokey, with some cherry undertones. Fairly smooth now, but could probably improve with age.

About This Producer

Felsina, for all of its current, well-deserved respect and fame, is the product of an ancient and humanitarian history. In the 12th century this estate was a roadside hospital directed by Benedictine monks who tended to the pilgrims and merchants traveling the Strata de Rancia.

The winery is located within the most south-eastern part of the Chianti Classico zone near Siena. In 1961, Domenico Poggiali purchased the property and 57 hectares of vineyards. His son-in-law, Giuseppe Mazzocolin, currently runs the estate with the assistance of renowned oenologic consultant Franco Bernabei and vineyard overseer Agostino Buracchi. Together, they have wrought a portfolio of wines that recognize the mystical world of Sangioveto.

The Cru Rancia and the Fontalloro are two of the premiere wines coming out of Tuscany today.
