Interestingly for such a ripe wine, this is rather reserved on the nose even with vigorous swirling, can only be coaxed to reveal glimpses of very ripe plum, mocha and spice notes leading to massively constituted flavors that explode in the mouth with breathtaking intensity. This is a bruiser of a wine that is every bit as robust and powerful as the Rugiens but with real style and grace despite all of the muscle. In short, wow!

(tasted from stainless steel tank) Full medium ruby. Liqueur-like aromas of earth, licorice, game and chocolate, with notes of pepper and brown spices; distinct suggestions of surmaturite Superconcentrated, mouthfilling and exotic, with a fine-grained texture and a suggestion of pineapple. This has perfectly integrated its 75% new oak. A huge wine that finishes with outstanding persistence and extremely suave tannins. These vines run north-south, and yielded a normal crop load in 2003. Hervet suggests that this will surpass the legendary '47.

Deep colour. Playful nose – a rather confident depth of ripe fruit flavour without any too obvious "burnt" or "stewed" notes. Great depth of cherry fruit completely overlays the tannins, which are considerable. Wait for this wine.

A big, beefy red, showing animal and plum aromas and flavors, with a sinewy texture framing the dried cherry and berry notes. Tough tannins mark the finish. This needs time. 300 cases imported.

About This Producer

Eighty-six hectares of Grand and Premier Cru vineyards. One hundred thirty total hectares in the Cote d'Or. Eighty crus produced each vintage. Two hundred seventy-five years of history. Bouchard Pere et Fils is truly an institution in Beaune. The Maison was founded by father and son Michel and Joseph Bouchard in 1731, and the family wine merchant business has grown steadily ever since, taking any opportunity to add to its vineyard holdings along the way. Not to be completely overshadowed by its wines, Bouchard conducts business in the very center of Beaune in the old Chateau de Beaune, whose storied past rivals that of the Maison. In 1995, the Champagne family of Joseph Henriot took control of Bouchard, resulting in improvements in quality, not to mention the addition of more top level vineyard sites. Reds of particular interest include the flagship Beaune Greve Vigne de l'Enfant Jesus and the Chambertin-Clos de Beze. As for whites, the Meursault Genevrieres, Meursault Perrieres, Chevalier-Montrachet and Montrachet are all great interpreters of their particular sites, exhibiting the many nuances of grand and premier cru Chardonnay.
