International Wine Cellar | 94

($150) Deep ruby color. Blackberry, pepper, mint and tar on the vibrant nose. Lush but dry, with strong acids giving terrific cut and definition to the dark berry and bitter chocolate flavors. But this also offers excellent breadth and palate coverage. Finishes with full tannins that call for at least a few years of additional bottle aging.

The 2003 Cabernet Sauvignon Paradise Hills Estate (14.5% natural alcohol) enjoyed the same upbringing as the Merlot. Its dark opaque plum/purple color is followed by more restrained aromatics of creme de cassis, vanillin and sweet barbecue/charcoal notes. Full-bodied and rich with more structured, tannic flavors, a sweet mid-palate, a beautiful core of ripe fruit, terrific purity and density, and the great character one expects from this site, it will benefit from another 3-4 years of cellaring, and should keep for two decades, fulfilling proprietor Claude Blankiet's ambition to make a world-class wine.

Very dark, slightly sweet fruit, velvety tannin. Delightful.

About This Producer


Located in the western hills of Yountville, in the foothills of the Mayacamas range, Blankiet shares a founding date with Arietta. In 1996, the husband and wife team of Claude and Katherine Blankiet, with the aid of viticulturist David Abreu, and winemaker Helen Turley, created a stable of wines that validate the extraordinary terroir of their 16 acres of vineyards. The first eight vintages were made by Turley, but now the winemaking team consists of consulting oenologist Michel Rolland and winemaker Martha McClellan-Levy.
