($56; 16.5% alcohol; tasted from tank prior to bottling) Deep ruby-red. Superripe aromas of black cherry and black raspberry. Large-scaled and utterly mouthfilling, with a wonderful chocolatey richness leavened by ripe acidity. In fact, this huge wine offers surprising mid-palate delineation offlavor for its outsized ripeness. Finishes with very ripe tannins and excellent length. "It was critical to eliminate the raisins," noted Alban. Indeed, as extravagantly ripe as this is, it's not at all cooked. There's very little grenache from elsewhere inCaliforniawith the saturation of color of Alban's fruit.

Deep purple with thin, quite dark legs. Powerful aromas of licorice, black fruits, some pine, stone, and chalk. Sturdy and thick fruit ? mouthcoating and viscous. Excellent length with even more strength on the finish than usual. Good acidity levels and loads of tannin buttress the wine?s impressive concentration. This wine has power in spades but needs more dexterity in order to achieve a higher level of quality. A 75% Grenache/25% Syrah blend that was aged in French oak (75% new) for 18 months before being put into glass without filtering. Shockingly, the winery claims that they received a mere .18 tons per acre yield in this vintage.

About This Producer

Alban Vineyards is a California wine estate producing various Rhone style blends and varietal wine. The winery is located in Edna Valley, near Arroyo Grande in the southern corner of San Luis Obispo County.

Starting in 1985, John Alban planted grapes for other people until he bought an estate in 1989. With a focus on creating wines made from Rhone Valley varieties, Alban became one of the pioneers in the Rhone Rangers movement, and is considered one of the most influential American Rhone producers.

Within a 250-acre (100 ha) area, the vineyard area extends 60 acres (24 ha), and is planted with varieties Syrah, Viognier and Roussanne. Grenache and Roussanne are also sourced from vineyards located in the warmer Paso Robles AVA.

Among the vineyard designate wines produced are the Lorraine Vineyard, Reva Vineyard Syrah and Seymour's Vineyard Syrah. Alban also produces Pandora, a blend of Grenache and Syrah, and a botrytized dessert wine.
