International Wine Cellar | 92

($500) Good dark red-ruby. Distinctly rocky, mineral-driven aromas of redcurrant and leather. Juicy, suave and delineated, with lovely acid spine and a strong spice character. Not a dense or fleshy wine (fans of sheer size may be underwhelmed) but nicely balanced, pure and long on personality. Finishes with dusty, broad tannins and lovely finesse.

Maybe I am just bitter that I will never get off the wait list, but I have bought several bottles of Screagle second hand and though they are always great, I don't think it lives up to hype or price, especially the recent vintages. Solid wine, but I will spend my thousands elsewhere (e.g. Peter Michael's Les PAvot, Shaeffer, Morlet, Hundred Acre, or Kongsgaard all offer comparable and in some cases much better wines at much lower prices).

About This Producer


Screaming Eagle is a success story almost without equal and is the definitive "cult" classic of Napa. Founded in 1989 by Jean Philips, it "captures the essence of one great Cabernet site in Oakville." Growing mostly Cabernet, Merlot and Cabernet Franc on its little plot of land, Screaming Eagle produces an averages of 500 cases per year. The majority of that is sold only to members on the notoriously difficult to join mailing list.

Winemaker Heidi Barrett has helped propel this winery into legendary status, utilizing her expertise in showcasing the subtleties of individual vineyards for amazing results. As of 2006 the winemaker is Andy Erickson, who also makes wines for Arietta, Hartwell and Favia.
