The 2003 Reserve Claret is a blend of 67% Merlot and 33% Cabernet Sauvignon that achieved 14.4% alcohol. An exquisite candidate for wine of the vintage, it comes from a vineyard high on the summit of Spring Mountain. Eighty-three percent of the fruit comes from Sonoma and the rest from Napa County as the vineyard sits astride the county lines. Its dark plum/garnet color reveals a slight lightening at the edge. A beautiful nose of cedarwood, forest floor, red and black currants, kirsch and plum is followed by a full-bodied wine with great freshness, a rich, textured mouthfeel and sensational concentration with no heaviness. This is an uplifting, quintessential mountain Cabernet Sauvignon that outperforms the vintage. Just entering its plateau of full maturity, it can be drunk now and over the next decade.

A classy effort. Rich and polished, focused and complex, serving up tiers of ripe currant, mineral, black cherry and plum flavors that fan out evenly on the palate. Gains richness and depth on the finish. Lots of finesse, grace and elegance. Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Petit Verdot. 402 cases made.

Classic Pride here. Red and black fruits, with cassis, asian spices, cedar wood, and a healthy tannic backbone. Great juice!

Absolutely lovely bottle. Decanted for about 3 hours and consumed with a lamb Easter dinner. Dark color. Beautiful nose of wild berries and chocolate. Broad palate with very long finish. Balance of acidity and tannins is just perfect. This is silky, rich and round. Wish I had more....

About This Producer

Riding the crest of the Mayacamas Mountain Range at an elevation of 2,100 feet, Pride Mountain Vineyards' 200+ acre property is bisected by the Napa/Sonoma county line. The family owned winery has been making some of Spring Mountain's best wines since 1990. Winemaker Bob Foley employs the laborious technique of picking, vinifying, and barrel-aging each of 80 vineyard blocks separately, resulting in the most ideal ripeness levels and blend quality. This integration of vineyard practices and winemaking art is done purposefully. The goal is wines that are bold and fruitful, and that speak of their mountain lineage. Considered by Robert Parker to belong in "the top echelon of California's quality wineries," wines from Pride's gravelly mountaintop vineyards are consistently highly rated and are a staple component of any classic Napa collector's cellar.
