Superripe, roasted nose shows a medicinal quality. Lush and sweet but a bit cooler in style than the 2004. Today, the wine's edge of acidity has not yet come into harmony with its firm tannins.

The 2003 Matriarch (1,500 cases) is a ripe, spicy, supple-textured effort offering beautiful plum, anise, black currant, tobacco, and toasty oak notes. Full-bodied, lush, and concentrated, it should drink well for 10-15 years.

At a perfect stage of maturity - still good tannin but the fruit is subdued and showing secondary flavors. Classic Matriarch/Harlan wine, nose is not classically fruit forward like most CA cabs, more earthy and in balance. Outstanding!

Site Blog: The Wine Forum MUST DECANT 1-2 Hours Definitely showing the character of this hot vintage. Color: Mostly Purple, garnet dark red edges Nose & Palate: A bit alcoholic at first, I was a little disappointed, but after an hours decant it started to blossom. Black cherry and kirsch, creamy oak and currants. Palate is medium to full, pretty elegant texture for such a dark wine. Tannins are in there on the finish, barely noticeable but finely grained. Explosive palate after 2 hours, but in a somewhat refined manner, much better with time open.
