Medium yellow-green color. Lovely fruit-driven aromas of peach, lemon, pineapple and clove offer noteworthy complexity and excellent lift. Then fat, rich, dry and improbably full in the mouth, with harmonious acidity framing and lifting the nuanced flavors of pineapple, lemon, flowers, honeysuckle and stone. Finishes quite dry and extremely long, with an impression of underlying power. This may ultimately need more aging than the 2004.

An evolved medium gold color (no greenish hue) rivals a handful of the older looking Chardonnays that were a rarity in this vertical tasting. More honeyed brioche notes are intertwined with notions of damp earth, dense, rich fruit and tighter aromatics. Well-made, full-bodied and rich, but monolithic, it will last another 5-10 years, but I doubt it will be one of the most brilliant wines of the group.

Creamy-textured, with hints of vanilla, anise, pear and melon that are intense, focused and concentrated. Still young and tight, showing great intensity and persistent flavors. 335 cases made.

Maybe the consistently best Chardonnay in California. Distinctly new world in style, but restrained. Remarkably smooth, with baking spices and honeysuckle notes. Still going strong

Honeysuckle and wildflowers. Structured palate with no flabbiness, great finish.

About This Producer

One of the most influential mavens of modern California winemaking, Helen Turley creates in Marcassin wines that are among the most sought-after in California. Though the wines are made following a traditionalist Burgundian style, they are unique, complex representations of California Pinot and Chardonnay. Turley's straightforward winemaking philosophy is, "...great vineyards, meticulously farmed, limited yield, long hang time and natural yeast."
