Burghound Issue: Issue 18

A high-toned nose of menthol, plum, prune, earth and smoked game leads to exceptionally ripe, low acid, full, generous and palate saturating flavors with a powerful, incredibly dense and notably tannic finish. This is a robust, muscular and masculine wine that is too ripe for me but it will outlive us all.

($120) Bright medium red. Very ripe but unforthcoming nose hints at violet. Then supple, rich and very concentrated, but not yet showing its complexity. This doesn't appear to possess the energy of Jadot's best '03s but this very solidly constructed wine may simply be in an awkward stage. Finishes with sweet, broad tannins and excellent length.

Super-spicy blackberries and black cherries make up the aromatic profile of the 2003 Clos Vougeot. While Jadot's parcel in this grand cru is sometimes derided for its location (reaching down to the wall by the N74), in 2002 and 2003 - two vintages where water-retaining soils were advantageous - the results have been glorious. Its dense, pure personality is medium to full-bodied, chewy-textured, crammed with dark cherries, and immensely concentrated. This awesomely deep, muscular, and persistent wine is masculine and displays exceptional ripeness.

Chocolate anyone? That's the main flavor, with accents of black cherry, plum and cassis. It's firm, but there's a sweetness and intensity that balances the tannins. Fine, cassis-filled finish. 385 cases imported.

Very well-made, but hardly spectacular with predominant nose of dark cherries. Smooth and polished with some pleasant tannins and a so-so finish which may develop further as it evolves.
