($110-$150) Ruby-red. Sexy nose offers superripe currant, raspberry, graphite and coconut. Lush, very rich and fine-grained, with an almost confectionery sweetness and thickness for this St. Julien. Atypically powerful on the back end, but not hard. Bruno Borie took over direction of this property with the 2003 and immediately switched to a heavier bottle with a longer neck that could accommodate a 55-millimeter cork. A terrific showing-but I'd still give this wine another four or five years of aging.

A hot, dry summer resulted in a tiny production of under 10,000 cases of 2003 Ducru Beaucaillou from yields of 35 hectoliters per hectare. This beauty boasts a deep plum/ruby/purple color with a touch of lightening at the edge. Aromas of licorice, creme de cassis, incense and spring flowers are followed by a full-bodied, opulent wine with loads of fruit and glycerin as well as a plush texture. It is just entering its plateau of maturity where it should remain for another 10-15 years.

Intense aromas of blackberry, currant and cherry. Full-bodied, with masses of big, velvety tannins and a finish that lasts for minutes. A blockbuster. A classic big, juicy claret. 17,500 cases made.

Sultry garnet color. Pungent berry nose with a hint of tanned leather. Double decanted and allowed to open for a few hours. Silky, medium bodied and delightful. Tannins are still packing a decent punch. This will be a real beauty in years to come. I won't be cracking another until 2015+.

We had this as part of a Cabernet Sauvignon tasting on 10/3/09. It had a slightly reserved bouquet with tobacco, black currant, smoke, mineral and graphite aromas. The palate was smooth, balanced and very dry with black currant, blackberry, dirt, mineral, graphite and tobacco flavors. It was very earthy and absolutely terrific!

About This Producer

Located in the appellation of Saint-Julien, Chateau Ducru-Beaucaillou is named for the beautiful large stones and pebbles that cover the vineyard. These stones create ideal grape-growing conditions, as they aid in drainage, reflect sun onto the vines, and keep the ground from drying out. These conditions create the "typical" Saint-Julien wine - elegant and smooth, with a long finish. The outstanding structure of these wines gives them great aging potential as well.

The Borie family has owned the estate for the past 60 years, and still lives in the chateau. The chateau itself is unusual for Bordeaux because the house was built directly over the cellar, which means the family lives literally surrounded by their wines. The estate's second wine is called La Croix de Beaucaillou.
