($159-$175) Deep ruby-red. Very ripe yet fresh on the nose: cherry, raspberry, graphite, chocolate, minerals. Lush, velvety and sweet, with unusual vivacity for a 2003 from the right bank thanks to the 50% cabernet franc component. Really coats the mouth with flavors of black raspberry, currant and chocolate. Not yet hugely complex, but the wine's freshness, ripe tannins and superb persistence suggest that aging will bring greater nuance. Has the stuffing to buffer its chewy tannins. This was bottled in September of 2005.

I was disappointed with this bottle. Was expecting a more full bodied wine, lacked concentration to be great, still nice nose and aromas, fresh but not complex and powerful enough to get the expected wow effect from Angelus...

Site Blog: Unidentified Appellation Plenty of grilled herb, roasted fruits and dried flowers gave off a unique first appeal. While the wine offered a tad less immediate opulence, the fruit was lovely on entry (and faded a bit on the finish for me). A classic claret and unmistakable upside.

About This Producer

Chateau Angelus is located just west of the town of St. Emilion and was promoted to Premier Grand Cru Classe status in 1996. Typical blends consist of Merlot and Cabernet Franc which are grown on Angelus's southerly-exposed vineyards. Chateau Angelus also produces a second wine called Carillon de l'Angelus.
