($85; the fruit was picked at the end of a heat wave, and Hirby did a heavy selection, eliminating the raisins) Good full ruby. Sweet aromas of cassis, black cherry, licorice, minerals and sexy oak. Juicy and densely packed, with a sappy sweetness but also a slight hard edge. Finishes with broad, oak-driven tannins that reach the front teeth and a note of menthol. Shows a slightly aggressive quality from a percentage of shriveled grapes.

The 2002 Cabernet Sauvignon Beckstoffer To-Kalon Vineyard (100% Cabernet Sauvignon) admirably demonstrates the noble potential of this site. Its dark ruby/purple color is accompanied by pure notes of creme de cassis fruit, lead pencil, black currants, and cedar, full body, and admirable purity. It should drink well for 12-15 years.

A delicious Cabernet, smooth, rich and creamy, with layers of vivid blackberry, espresso, currant and hints of hazelnut and nutmeg. Tightly wound, dense and concentrated, with a long, intricate aftertaste that keeps revealing extra flavor nuances. 202 cases made.

The premiere release from Juan Mercado and Wendell Laidley and made by the very talented Mike Hirby (a 2004 Vinfolio "Winemaker to Watch"). Sourced from a tiny block of one of the "A" list Oakville Bench vineyards, the pedigree is readily apparent. The wine shows a full nose of black stone fruits with spicy plum and lapsang tea. More black fruits and sweet caramel tinged oak is found on the palate. The wine has a bold lushness that culminates on the finish.
