International Wine Cellar Author: Stephen Tanzer Issue: Issue 120

($30-$40) Red-ruby. Cool aromas of blackcurrant, espresso and menthol. Then sweet and pliant in the mouth, with concentrated, very pure currant, chocolate and mint flavors. Wonderfully smooth for the vintage. Broadens out impressively on the back end, finishing with firm, ripe tannins. St. Julien

Wine Advocate Author: Robert Parker Issue: 158

This wine has seemingly gone to sleep and is in a dormant, ungracious stage, exhibiting notes of green tea leaves intermixed with red and black currants in its dusty nose. A medium-bodied wine with moderately high tannin and a certain austerity, it seems to be a much less impressive effort than I thought from barrel or is it just impossibly closed? There is still substantial size and tannic clout to the wine, but the fruit seems to have gone into hiding.

Wine Spectator Author: James Suckling

A solid wine with berry, currant and mineral character. Full-bodied, with silky tannins and a long finish. Racy. Alfred Tesseron is making excellent wine nearly every year now. One of the few 2002s better than 2001.

Surprise of the night (on the upside!). Cassis and blueberries, earthy component. A little leaner than the 2001, showing a little more oak backbone in a positive manner. Tannins are silky. A sleeper waking up from a good dream. Go for it.

Another '02 that is just beginning to turn the corner and show well. Right now this is reminding me a lot of 1998 Sociando Mallet when that wine was the same age (7 yrs old). This wine is a brooding one, with just a whiff of vanilla, cassis extract, black tea, a hint of red fruit to keep it lively, and good acidity. The way the wine has just soaked up its oak is probably a good indication of its depth. It's still too early to drink, but it has begun to be "drink-able."
