Burghound Issue: Issue 15

(100% from vines in Aloxe and all domaine fruit) This didn't show very well the day I was chez Latour as it was clearly tired and there was quite a bit of unabsorbed SO2 on the nose. Still, the underlying material is so strong that it doesn't require a great deal of imagination to see where this will be in a year or two. Despite the bottling fatigue, this is still a very powerful, deep and sappy wine with intense minerality and a long finish.

Spicy stones can be discerned in the aromatics of the 2002 Corton-Charlemagne. Light to medium-bodied, fresh, and revealing impressive depth as well as concentration, it displays liquefied rock, pear, and apple flavors throughout its lengthy character. Notes of roasted herbs and minerals make their presence felt in its long, suave finish.

Medium gold. Mature, but not oxidized, aromas of rich fruit, soil and flowers. Richness carries over to mouth-filling flavors that start out a bit ponderous (a vintage characteristic) and lacking Grand Cru shape or definition. With air, develops tension and texture - an improvement that continued for several hours - as well as spice, but still not quite enough acid for the wine's body, so best to pair with foods that can add a little snap. Showing better than my last bottle several years ago.

Honey and almond on the nose. Apricot on the palate. Minerality mixed with the fruit is delicious after 1/2 hour of air. Finish does not stop. Wonderful bottle of wine at this point.

Dissaspointing. Oily oak. Past its prime
