($160) Good full ruby. Highly aromatic nose of blackberry, black cherry, leather and spices, with complicating mineral, herbal and earth notes. At once creamy and juicy on the palate, with black fruit, mint and earth flavors. Still a bit youthfully brutal on the end, finishing with building tannins.

The stunning 2002 Cabernet Sauvignon Howell Mountain is more of a long distance runner. It boasts a dense purple color along with copious notes of graphite, plum sauce, blueberries, black raspberries, wet steel and damp gravel. Deep, full-bodied and powerful, it is quite compelling in its purity, texture and awesome potential. Forget it for another 3-5 years and drink it over the following three decades.

Firm, dense and tannic, with peppery wild berry, chocolate, peppermint and mocha. You can almost taste the rocks on the finish.

An opaque black purple hue with thick legs showing moderate amounts of coloration. A bit of funk, strong blackberry, stone, and mineral scents - as with all of the 2002 Lokoyas the aromas are very primary right now but there is no denying the potential is there. Intense and layered tannins coupled with excellent levels of acidity. Lots of fruit and crushed stone on the wine's lengthy finish. Keyes Vineyard was the source for Liparita's quite fine Cabernets of the early to mid nineties. In 1996, Liparita sold off the vineyard and now Lokoya sources its Howell Mountain fruit from it. The vineyard is at 1,700 feet (22 of its 68 acres is planted to Cabernet) and tastes of the true Howell Mountain terroir. This relatively cool climate results in firm and powerful Cabernets that can last. 100% Cabernet.
