Burghound Issue: Issue 17

(1.2 ha of 60 to 65 year old vines in the sub-climats of Les Treux and Cruots, which is also known as Vignes Blanches) Much deeper ruby though by no means dark. This is aromatically quite ripe and quite expressive with plenty of Vosne-style spice and pungent iron and earth aromas. The big, powerful and intense flavors are extremely rich sappy and firm with outstanding length. It's interesting that such a rich wine could be so fresh and the chewy finish is not only long but actually racy plus there is such good balance that this will be capable of 20 years of life.

International Wine Cellar Author: Stephen Tanzer Issue: Issue 113

(the yield here was just 24 hectoliters per hectare, according to Rouget) Good full red. Pure, tangy, cool aromas of raspberry, licorice and spice. Sweet, pure and lively in the mouth; shows more flesh and much better extraction than the foregoing samples. Finishes with sweet tannins and very good length.

Thick, sweet, and almost hazardous. Dangerous? The best value of the Rouget wines is definitely the Vosne-Romanée.

A young wine, but not at all closed. The 2002's were predicted by Rouget to be a pleasure to drink at any point in their long lives, and this one fit that description perfectly. Quite a powerful wine, the nose showing concentrated sweet cherries and maple cured meats, with some briary juniper berries and coffee beans rolling around. The palate expansive, with ripe fruit still coating long, fine tannins; the meaty note more savoury and salty than on the nose and the fruit a little more brambly. A charming wine, poised and good company all by itself.
