Bright ruby. Smoky, floral-accented aromas of redcurrant, cherry pit and plum, with a peppery topnote. Sweet and open-knit, offering musky red fruit and floral pastille flavors and notes of mocha and succulent herbs. Shows very good depth and power for the vintage, finishing smooth, sweet and long. Not the greatest Vega by any means but highly successful for 2002, and you can actually enjoy it right now.

Twenty per cent of Cabernet and those unknown grapes spice the Tempranillo this year. Tasted straight after the Valbuena of the same vintage this nose was immediately much more compelling. Taut, exciting, multi-faceted, the wine seemed quite different from older vintages - maybe simply because I have never tasted older vintages at this early stage - but I couldn't help but see the resemblance to the smooth richness of Pomerol. Compared with the Toro wine though, this has much more savouriness.

Having skipped over releasing a 2001 due to frost damage, the 2002 Unico is a result of a severe selection as attested by the label which shows that just 42,932 bottles were produced instead of 108,536 in 2000. It has an incredibly intense nose, much more linear and focused than the more flamboyant 2000, with scents of dark cherry, creme de cassis and a touch of honey and melted dark chocolate. The palate is medium-bodied with a slight grainy texture on the entry, a hint of cooked meat inflecting the layers of toasty dark berry fruit. It is very harmonious and perhaps at this juncture, edgier and grittier than the millennial Unico. It is less opulent and more structured than the 2000, but is a more cerebral wine.

Maturing now, this polished red offers cherry, herbal, tobacco and menthol flavors over firm, well-integrated tannins, with a long cedar and floral finish. Graceful and harmonious.

About This Producer

Vega Sicilia is Spain's most well known and prestigious estate. It was founded in 1864 by Don Eloy Lecanda y Chaves, who brought vine cuttings from Bordeaux of Cabernet Sauvignon, Malbec and Merlot to plant alongside Tinto Fino. Vega Sicilia's 3 cuvees include the flagship "Unico," a multi-vintage blend called "Reserva Especial," and the more forward-style Valbuena.

Depending on the vintage, Unico is made from a blend of 80% Tempranillo with the balance of Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. Traditionally the wine is aged for ten years in barrel before its release. The Reserva Especial is a blend of top vintages, while the Valbuena is made from younger vines and bottled after five years. A Valbuena cuvee with three years of aging was produced until 1998, but has been discontinued.

The Reserva Especial bottlings contain a unique blend of vintages:

1979 bottling: 1962, 1964, 1968 vintages, 1980 bottling: 1960, 1962, 1972 vintages, 1990 bottling: 1968, 1970 vintages, 1993 bottling: 1970, 1972 vintages, 1996 bottling: 1973, 1981 vintages, 1997 bottling: 1981, 1986, 1990 vintages, 1998 bottling: 1981, 1990 vintages, 2000 bottling: 1985, 1990, 1994 vintages, 2004 bottling: 1985, 1990, 1991 vintages, 2005 bottling: 1985, 1991, 1996 vintages
