($150; 50% merlot, 45% cabernet franc and 5% cabernet sauvignon) Dark ruby-red. Black cherry, mocha and licorice on the nose. Ripe, broad and dry; suave and sophisticated. Flavors of red berries lifted by floral and mineral components. Densely packed, backward wine, finishing with substantial dusty tannins.

The 2002 Le Desir, an attractive blend of 53% Merlot, 41% Cabernet Franc, 5% Cabernet Sauvignon and 1% Malbec, is round, fruity, soft, fleshy, medium to full-bodied and seemingly fully mature. Enjoy it over the next decade. It is the most evolved and least concentrated of Verite's 2002s.

Dark ruby. Great scents of dark fruit on the nose along with some minerality. Slightly disjointed notes of cassis, cherry and pepper with a hint of heat on the finish. Very good wine which I'm sure will evolve tremendously given enough time. 50+9+9+17+8=93

This was a little disappointing for me based on what I was expecting. Very complex aromatically, but in the mouth not nearly as concentrated, smooth, or well balanced as I thought it would be. The Cab Franc fruit seemed to stand out. Tannins were a little dry and tart on the medium finish. This got a few extra points from me for the complex aromatics, but very average mouthfeel.

About This Producer

"The name Verite, French for truth, stands for wines that reflect their soil with integrity." The artisanal project of the late legendary California wine pioneer Jess Jackson, Verite sets out to produce serious Bordeaux-quality wines, with distinct California charm. To carry out his vision, Jackson imported Bordelais winemaker Pierre Seillan to craft three separate cuvees, each in the style of individual Bordeaux communes.

From high elevation vineyards in Sonoma County's Alexander Valley, Knight's Valley, Bennett Valley and Chalk Hill appellations, comes "La Joie," "Le Desire," and "La Muse." While "La Joie" is a Cabernet-based nod to Paulliac, "Le Desire" and "La Muse" aspire toward Cabernet Franc-friendly Saint-Emilion and Merlot-centric Pomerol respectively. Not unlike their Bordeux counterparts, these wines are built to last 30-50 years, so to expect a typical fruit-driven, vivacious wine would be a mistake. The care taken to craft these profound efforts has been recognized by Robert Parker, who has awarded seven 100-point scores for Verite's three blends, the first time a Sonoma County winery has received this many perfect scores.
