Reviews For This Wine

International Wine Cellar | 90

($85; shiraz with 8% viognier) Roasted black cherry syrup on the nose, along with an exotic hint of apricot from the viognier. Sappy and fruit-driven, with liqueur-like fla vors of black cherry and black raspberry. Densely packed and sweet. Finishes with substantial ripe tannins that turned a bit dry with aeration.

Made from nine year old cuttings sourced from the RunRig vineyard, this 92% Shiraz and 8% Viognier is cofermented and then aged for 18 months in two and a half year old barrels originally used for RunRig. Opaque purple black colored wine with a few thick and moderately pigmented legs. A somewhat tight but still complex nose of chocolate, sage, black olive, pepper, coffee, leather, smoke, charred wood, anise, and funk. Dark fruits come forth on the palate. Very smooth but substantial tannins allayed with excellent acidity. Considerable length and very suave despite the wine?s dense concentration. Needs time to bloom.

About This Producer

Torbreck Vintners was founded by David Powell in 1994. Although located in Australia's Barossa Valley, the name comes from a forest in Scotland where Powell previously worked as a lumberjack before becoming a winemaker. Torbreck's production is centered around the classic Barossa Valley varieties of Shiraz, Grenache and Mataro (Mourvedre), and the winemaking philosophy is based on David's love for the wines of France's Rhone Valley. Along with many intensely flavored red wines blended from old-vine Shiraz and Grenache, Torbreck also produces white wines from Viognier, Marsanne, and Roussanne.
