(from a .97 ha parcel of 39 year old vines and 75% new wood) A very toasty nose with hints of torrefaction and generous black fruits lead to supple, extremely fresh and vibrant flavors of outstanding complexity and incredible length. This has the classic Bonnes Mares power and muscle yet the tannins are more refined than normal. Again, this is slightly woodier than I personally prefer but the fruit quality is first rate.

($165) Dee p red. Pure, sappy, complex aromas of wild red berries, mocha, menthol, wild herbs, cardamom and mace; very Bonnes-Mares. Sweet, chewy and deep, with lovely flavor definition and grip. Very rich but classically dry. Wonderfully sweet, expanding finish shows very fine tannins and is lifted by a menthol note. The supple, suave texture and fullness of this grand cru is testament to the Groffiers' vineyard work.

Raw meat, black fruits, and spices can be found in the profound aromas of the 2002 Bonnes Mares. Medium to full-bodied, thick, and concentrated, this is a structured yet lush effort, crammed with stony black fruits.

About This Producer

With his son Serge, Robert Groffier creates spectacular Pinot Noirs that are the powerful benchmarks of the respective communes. The Amoureuses, with its succulent fruit, is a kaleidoscope of aromatics and flavorsl. The Clos de Beze is an effort unto itself and has a mouth-coating, sweet earthy, gamy, bramble quality that is elegant and classy. The Sentiers and Haut Doix Chambolles offer classic, high-toned red berry and cherry elements that tend toward a bit more elegance and herb in the former and supple, round vibrancy in the latter.
