($120) Bright, saturated ruby-red. Sweet aromas of roasted plum, mocha, truffle, loam and maple syrup. Sweet, lush and broad, with fat flavors of currant and spices. Finishes with substantial, building, dusty tannins that coat the teeth. This would make a very good steakhouse red.

A 9,500-case blend of 77% Cabernet Sauvignon, 20% Merlot, and 3% Cabernet Franc, the 2002 Proprietary Red Wine boasts a deep ruby/purple color as well as lovely scents of flowers, plums, black currants, and notions of cherries, earthy/loamy soil, and tobacco leaf. Clearly the richest Quintessa to date, it is medium to full-bodied, with a seamless integration of wood, tannin, and acidity.

Sleek and focused, dark in color and rich in flavor, with full-bodied currant, mocha, blackberry and clove flavors that gain depth and complexity on the finish, leaving you hoping for a shade more length. On the aftertaste, the woody, leathery flavors stand out. Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Cabernet Franc. 9,700 cases made.

About This Producer


In 2002, Valeria and Agustin Huneeus' dream of the quintessential wine estate - one vineyard that produces one singular estate wine - was realized with the opening of the winery at Quintessa.

Quintessa is truly a "winemaker's winery." The design facilitates a gravity-flow process and a state-of-the-art winery specifically tailored with fermenters and tanks sized to match the diverse blocks in the Quintessa vineyard. Additionally, the winery at Quintessa is outfitted with the latest in winemaking technology. French oak and stainless steel fermenters stand tall along the winery's front wall, providing the winemaking team with a choice of characteristics adding complexity and subtlety to the blend.

Quintessa, like all classic wines of the world, bears the same name as the vineyard from which it is made. The winery's goal is to produce the best expression of this extraordinary vineyard each and every year.
