This is a 320- to 500-case cuvee made by talented viticulturist Lisa Behrens, of Behrens and Hitchcock, and Francoise Peschon, the longtime winemaker at Araujo Estate. Aged 20 months in 100% French oak, of which half is new, the deep ruby/purple-hued 2002 Cabernet Sauvignon exhibits an elegant, sweet, precise bouquet of black currants intermixed with incense, graphite, and subtle new oak. With firmness, finesse, balance, purity, sweet tannin, and a long, rich finish, it will provide immense pleasure over the next 10-15 years.

The underground favorite! I dubbed this wine Drinkward Phenomenon two years ago. This is the third vintage from Lisa Drinkward and Francoise Peschon. The color is inky purple-black with a ruby rim. The nose is full of cherries, dusty plum, black figs and lead pencil. Hints of smoky olive and creamy vanilla are evident as well. On the palate, there is exceptional polish, length and concentration with a bit more acidity than previous vintages.

About This Producer

Beginning with the 2000 vintage, Lisa Drinkward and Francoise Peschon, friends and mothers, began creating what was soon to become a major classic in the annals of Napa Valley startups. Both partners came in with excellent credentials - Drinkward, viticulturist at Behrens & Hitchcock (now known as Erna Schein), and Peschon, winemaker at Araujo (she recently transitioned to a consultant position there). Sourcing their fruit from small family-owned vineyards in Calistoga and producing no more than 500 cases, the pair dispels the myth that you need a sophisticated marketing plan and a fancy tasting room to compete in Napa Valley. If anything, their model is emulated more and more. Critics have been following it for a few years and there never seems to be enough to go around.
