Good full, deep red. Wild, meaty aromas of red fruits, bonfire, mocha, mint and spices. Lush, saline and sweet, with a captivating juicy quality and enticing spicy lift to its redcurrant, smoke and mineral flavors. Finishes classically dry and suave, with substantial broad, firm, thoroughly ripe tannins and lovely lingering sweetness of fruit. And less exotic than many big Napa Valley red wines from this vintage. This makes a beautiful drink today and may yet improve further in bottle.

There are 175 cases of the 2002 IX Syrah Estate. One hundred percent destemmed, fermented with indigenous yeasts, and aged in Burgundy barrels before being bottled unfined and unfiltered, this Cote Rotie-like Syrah smells like it contains some Viognier, although it does not. Exotic floral characteristics intermixed with notions of tapenade, blackberries, coffee, and chocolate jump from the glass of this full-bodied yet supple-textured, voluptuously-styled red. Already irresistible, this fabulous Syrah can be enjoyed over the next 7-10 years.

Dark, rich and intense, with a chewy core of beefy roasted plum and wild berry fruit accented by a dash of white pepper. An immense youngster that shows remarkable depth and concentration. For its size, muscle and power, there's an underlying sense of elegance and finesse. 150 cases made.

About This Producer

Ann Colgin, a former fine art dealer, began her label in 1992, and it quickly became one of the most sought-after names in Napa. Winemaking duties were originally handled by Helen Turley, then Mark Aubert in 1999. Production of the Cabernet Sauvignon Herb Lamb Vineyard is very small, with only about 350 cases produced each vintage. As with most of the world's truly great wines, Colgin's philosophy revolves around low yields and meticulous care of the fruit in the vineyard, winery and transportation between the two.
