Pale to medium garnet-brick in color, the 2001 Les Amis opens with meaty, earthy and leather aromas fused with stewed tea notes, a touch of sauteed herbs and coffee. Rich, full and opulent, the palate is more spicy and fruity than the nose, and finishes with a similar spicy, long length. It is mature now and ready to drink until 2016+.

This is a new offering from Torbreck. Made of 100% Grenache from 102 year old vines, the wine is aged in 100% new French oak for 18 months and then bottled unfined and unfiltered. This deeply pigmented red/black colored wine offers seamless drinking with beautiful, smooth yet very concentrated fruit. A moderately strong nose of anise, new wood, light pepper, stone, and dark fruits. Full and rich fruit coupled with virtually perfect tannins in the mouth. Acidity is well balanced and slightly on the high side but will aid aging. Sneaks up on you with its demure profile but the wine?s quality is considerable. Impressive. An Australian Rayas perhaps? (But more concentrated then recent Rayas).

About This Producer

Torbreck Vintners was founded by David Powell in 1994. Although located in Australia's Barossa Valley, the name comes from a forest in Scotland where Powell previously worked as a lumberjack before becoming a winemaker. Torbreck's production is centered around the classic Barossa Valley varieties of Shiraz, Grenache and Mataro (Mourvedre), and the winemaking philosophy is based on David's love for the wines of France's Rhone Valley. Along with many intensely flavored red wines blended from old-vine Shiraz and Grenache, Torbreck also produces white wines from Viognier, Marsanne, and Roussanne.
