($90) Deep ruby-red. Vibrant, high-pitched aromas of boysenberry, cassis, violet and sweet, chocolatey oak. Brighter and more sharply delineated than the 2002, with less obvious baby fat; offers a captivating combination of berry, spice and floral flavors. Very stylish, firmly tannic wine with the intensity and structure for 15 years or more of development in bottle.

Very dark crimson. A bit simpler than most and the only one on which I can still smell some oak. Round and full and very gently handled. A real charmer because there is some delicacy there too. Still pretty youthful with those carefully managed tannins just in evidence. Some dried spices ? an Indian market! (LM)

This is a beautiful wine, although more recent vintages may ultimately prove to be even better, particularly the 2007. This blend of 95% Cabernet Sauvignon and 5% Cabernet Franc, from one of NapaâÂ?Â?s prestigious sites on the valley floor tucked behind the town of St. Helena, has a dense blue/purple color and a beautifully sweet nose of spring flowers intermixed with raspberry jam, blueberries and black currants. Some licorice and subtle oak are followed by a quintessentially elegant yet substantial wine with sweet tannins, medium to full body and a seamless texture. Drinkable already, the wine will continue to offer the more elegant, complex, evolved style of Napa Cabernet Sauvignon produced in 2001 for at least another 15-20 years.

This fleshy wine exhibits rich currant, game, herb and cedary notes. Well-focused, plush and complex, the flavors are elegant and graceful through the finish. Nonetheless, it leaves you hoping for a shade more depth and concentration. Tasted twice, with consistent notes. 4,932 cases made.

Spottswoode is one of the legends of the valley, producing a steady stream of outstanding wines. This vintage shows why it is one of my favorites. Aromas of dark chocolate, blackberry and cigar box spice. Concentrated yet elegant on the palate with spicy nuances to the black fruit centered flavors. The oak is polished and integrated.
