The spectacular 2001 Syrah James Berry Vineyard Bone Rock is a 300- case blend of 92% Syrah, 5% Mourvedre, and 3% Grenache aged 21 months in both French and Hungarian oak. Racked once, and bottled unfined and unfiltered, it takes its name from fossilized whale bones that were found imbedded in the vineyard's steep, rocky terraces. It boasts great power and richness, but is incredibly well balanced. Its dense ruby/purple color is accompanied by a huge perfume of blackberry liqueur, camphor, licorice, earth, and roasting meat juices. The fabulous complex aromatics are followed by a full-bodied Syrah with great purity, impeccable balance, and world-class richness, complexity, and stature.

An impressive display of rich, zesty wild berry, raspberry jam and blackberry flavors, framed by firm acidity and integrated tannins and finishing with a long, concentrated aftertaste that keeps revealing new flavor facets. Ample tannins for short-term cellaring.

Actually, quite good. Probably nearing the end of it's drinking window. Drink soon. Had a very nice finish.

Site Blog: WiredJC Sadly, past its prime. Aroma is great but boozy; tremendous, delicious fruit and flavor in attack that unfortunately turns into an alcohol burner halfway thru the mid-palette and burns on the finish. You can still tell this was a great wine- once.

About This Producer

Saxum Vineyards is focused on producing Syrah, Grenache, and Mourvedre-based blends from the Templeton Gap of Paso Robles, California. They let their rocky calcareous soils, steep hillsides, and cooling ocean breezes speak through their wines by keeping yields extremely low, picking fruit at the peak of ripeness, and using a minimalist approach in the cellar. Production is kept at a total of 2200-2800 cases per year divided between 6 different cuvees: Broken Stones, Heart Stone Vineyard, James Berry Vineyard, Booker Vineyards, Rocket Block and Bone Rock.
