($45; these vines on quartz gravel yielded less than a ton of fruit per acre) Opaque black ruby. Deep, meaty aromas of roasted black raspberry, mocha and milk chocolate. Lush, sweet and stuffed with fruit; flavors of wild dark berries, dark chocolate, coffee, mocha and meat. Has just enough acidity to maintain its shape. In a decidedly late-harvest style, with huge, broad, thoroughly ripe tannins arriving late, and a lingering suggestion of M&Ms. This impressively fat, take-no-prisoners syrah will never be mistaken for an example from the Northern Rhone, but there's distinctive site character here. The vineyard was not watered between fruit set and veraison to ensure smaller berry size.

There are seven barrels (175 cases) of the 2001 Syrah. Inky/purple, with a smoky richness of blackberry jam intermixed with hints of creosote and truffles, this is a big, thick, opulent Syrah fruit bomb that should drink well for 10-12 years, possibly longer.
