($80) Good medium ruby. Explosive aromas of briary mountain berries, licorice and dark chocolate, Dense, sweet, layered and rich, with brooding, slightly medicinal flavors that expand impressively toward the back. At once powerful and smooth. Intriguing hints of black olive, mocha and earth. Very long and rich on the back end, with huge, molar-coating tannins. Harmonious from the outset, but a wine well worth cellaring.

Togni's 2001 Cabernet Sauvignon explodes onto the palate with layers of dark fruit, roasted coffee beans, autumn leaves and spices. This is an immensely satisfying wine graced with striking inner sweetness and a vibrancy that will drink well for another 15+ years. The density of the fruit at ten years of age is remarkable. The 2001 is a re-release from the estate's library.

Very good, but not great,at least yet. Way too tight for my taste at this point, and that was after decanting for four hours before we began to drink it. Loads of rich fruit, but tannins not well-integrated yet. Great aroma, but need to be patient before opening the next one. Nowhere near as good as the 1999 Montelena Estate that we opened about a month ago and about the same price point.
