International Wine Cellar Author: Stephen Tanzer Issue: Issue 114

($100-$140) Dark red. Expressive aromas of redcurrant, raspberry, dark plum, tobacco, graphite, minerals and flowers. Very suave and smooth on entry, then a bit closed in the middle palate. But this very young, firm Palmer boasts harmonious acidity, very good cut and excellent balance. Finishes with rather tight tannins that will need six or seven years to soften. (I was not able to taste the 2002 Palmer, which was being fined; Delfaut described it as more powerful and concentrated than the 2001.)

Wine Advocate Author: Robert Parker Issue: 153

A virile, muscular effort for this estate, the 2001 Palmer (a blend of 51% Cabernet Sauvignon, 44% Merlot, and 5% Petit Verdot) exhibits a saturated purple color to the rim. Although closed and backward, it is surprisingly powerful, layered, and formidably endowed, revealing hints of charcoal, black fruits, earth, and underbrush. There is a lot going on in this offering, but it needs 5-7 years of cellaring to resolve its high tannin.

Extremely pretty, with flowers, berries, chocolate and spices. Full-bodied, with a solid core of fruit and ripe, silky tannins; long and caressing. Beautiful. Palmer shows wonderful refinement.

Dark ruby red core fading slightly towards the rim, the Nose is powerful, crushed wet rock, minerals, dark red berry fruit, plum, perfumed, rose petal, slightly earthy with a touch of pine cone. On the palate its Super elegant, silky tannin, polished acidity , poached plums, raspberry, blackberry, mineral. Great length and intensity.

A great bottle, starts off with perfumed bouquet of plums, berries and spice. Nothing overwhelming but just a wonderfully expressive, balanced and harmonious blend of merlot and cabernet that dances on the tongue. One flavor I couldn't identify, was it tobacco or leather? Tannins are balanced.
