Jancis Robinson Author: Jancis Robinson

The Merlot-dominated wine from this famous estate. Very deep crimson with some evolution at the rim. Extremely opulent nose - the sort of nose I'd like to have seen on the Pétrus 1998 in this tasting. Minerals and then dark chocolate sweetness on the end. Slightly furry tannins. This could get a bit tiring to drink in quantity, which is why I don't give it a higher mark, but it is super opulent and many palates other than mine would adore it. Rather Californian.

The massive 2001 Masseto forms with Le Macchiole's Messorio and Tua Rita's Redigaffi a trio of world class Merlots in a ten square mile area where the variety virtually did not exist 15 years ago. The volume, richness, and sumptuousness are almost beyond description, as are the length and density of the flow and finish, but there is an underlying vein of purity and freshness which help maintain an impeccable balance.

This is fantastic, showing incredible length and richness. Supersilky and caressing. It's an absolute joy to taste. Full-bodied, with blackberry, light vanilla and a long, long finish. The aftertaste goes on for minutes. This is the best Masseto ever made and a monument to Tuscany. I have tasted it more than 10 times already in the last two years. It's always great.--Masseto vertical. 2,670 cases made.

This was an exceptional, unique wine. Intense aromatics of tobacco, exotic red fruits and an unmistakeable minerally soil quality that gave this a true sense of terrior. Also hints of coffee/espresso. Very full-bodied and very elegant at the same time. Lots of tannin but not tight or closed; I get the sense that this will always have some tannin. But a 'juicy' mid-palate gave this a freshness that balanced the tannin very well. Very enjoyable now, but I do think this will improve even more with age. A true drinking experience; I would love to try multiple vintages as I think Masseto's unique personality would come through across many vintages...

Purchased 1 bottle (5/08) from Suburban Wines in Yorktown Heights, NY; where it was kept in a temperature and humidity controlled vault since importing. The 2001 is considered by most critics to be the greatest vintage ever for this venerable Super-Tuscan wine. Year after year, this wine is selected as a Top 100 Wine (often top 10) by Wine Spectator, and of course did so this year also (in its greatest vintage ever). Comprised of 100% Merlot.. (048900)
