International Wine Cellar Author: Stephen Tanzer Issue: Issue 114

($90) Good full medium ruby. High-pitched aromas of violet, mint and bitter chocolate, with a hint of eucalyptus. Fat and sweet on entry, then quite lively in the middle, with distinctly rocky flavors of blackberry, shoe polish and black licorice, plus a whiff of fennel. From vines planted in 1992 on a southeast-facing knoll rich in boulders and shale; the fruit used to be sold to Duckhorn. Strong on personality. (The 2002 version, with its superripe aromas of cassis, graphite and spice cake and its liqueur-like concentration of fruit, should be at least as successful as the 2001.)

Wine Advocate Author: Robert Parker Issue: 195

A beautiful opaque purple color is accompanied by equally attractive notes of spring flowers, charcoal, creme de cassis and blueberry liqueur. Richly fruity, pure, full-bodied and layered, this voluptuously textured, dramatic, flamboyant Cabernet Sauvignon needs 2-4 more years of cellaring to hit its prime and should keep for two decades thereafter.

Wine Spectator Author: James Laube

Remarkably complex, dark, dense and concentrated, with layers of currant, blackberry, mocha, cedar and spice. This wine delivers pure, rich flavors; rugged, firm, rich and earthy tannins give it character. 750 cases made.

From a four-acre vineyard planted in 1992, the 2001 Hourglass is a deep nearly opaque black cherry red with a few moderately thick legs with considerable pigmentation. Open and airy with roasted plum, cherry, eucalyptus/mint (a few eucalyptus trees abut the vineyard and if one believes their impact on Marth's Vineyard then they are the source for this wine?s characteristic too), and dark oak scents. Excellent acidity and silky tannin allayed with concentrated but not one-dimensional fruit. The wine finishes long with a pleasing softness that is lacking in some 2001s (and is the only aspect of the vintage as a whole that gives me pause). Bob Foley has been the winemaker for this project since 1997, the first vintage commercially released. 100% Cabernet aged in a combination of new and neutral French oak for 18 to 20 months.
