($32) Good medium ruby. Smoky aromas of currant, dark chocolate, mocha, cedar, gunflint and black pepper; shows some rather syrah-like notes. Then lush, full and dense, with the gunflint character carrying through on the palate. More viscous than the 2000 example, with a hint of raisin but also ripe, harmonious acidity. Finishes with full, broad tannins and excellent length. From a vineyard that winemaker Wells Guthrie says is too steep to permit use of a tractor, and a yield of barely a ton an acre.

About This Producer

Wells Guthrie is a fervent believer that great wine begins in the vineyard. In pursuit of this, Copain has sought out vineyards with expositions, soil compositions, climates, clones, and rootstock selections capable of producing wines of distinction and singular character.

Copain's winemaking practices aim to express each site's unique qualities. Copain wines are highlighted by lower alcohols, natural vibrant acidity, gentle handling of the fruit and wine, native yeast ferments and minimal use of new oak.
