International Wine Cellar Author: Stephen Tanzer Issue: Issue 114

($200; a blend of 55% cabernet sauvignon, 31% merlot, 7% cabernet franc and 7% petit verdot) Saturated medium ruby. Knockout nose of blackberry liqueur, bitter chocolate, espresso, black licorice and smoky oak. Dense, chocolatey and extremely deep, with a sweetness of fruit that goes even beyond the Tychson Hill bottling. Thick and exotic, with liqueur-like notes of dark chocolate and licorice carrying through on the palate. Hiding its structure today, as the wine's tannins are buried under a wave of fruit.

The prodigious 2001 Cariad is a blend of 55% Cabernet Sauvignon, 31% Merlot and the rest Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot, primarily from two of David Abreu's vineyard holdings in Napa Valley (Madrona Ranch and Thorevilos). Complex notes of burning embers, charcoal, red and black fruits, subtle oak, licorice and cedarwood soar from the glass of this highly perfumed, stunning wine. It has everything going for it, including a flawless, seamless style, remarkable balance, stunning concentration and a finish that lasts nearly a minute. There is an open-knit character that makes it very accessible even though the wine still gives the impression of being a teenager in its developmental time-line.

Wine Spectator Author: James Laube

Graceful and harmonious, this rich, ripe, polished youngster pushes ripeness to the max, exhibiting layers of red currant, black cherry and spicy floral notes. It also shows some heat and finishes with firm, ripe tannins. Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Petit Verdot.. 440 cases made.

Dark purple, almost inky black in color with an overwhelming blend of aromas, ranging from black fruits, licorice, black olives, espresso, tobacco and hints of chocolate. Full bodied and bold and at first very fruity on the palate all the nuances developed as it was in the glass. The wine became richer and better with every sip - and the finish was incredible. A perfect wine.
