Stunning aromatic complexity with ultra pure layers upon layers of black and red pinot fruit mixed with violets, dried rose petals and rich soil notes plus far more minerality than this wine usually displays. The moderately structured flavors are buffered by superb extract and the sheer depth and breadth of flavors is dazzling. As classic Chambertin goes, this is not especially massive and more of a muscular middle weight but it is incredibly long and the intensity is simply breathtaking.

Deep red. Strong vanilla- and Asian spice-accented raspberry and kirsch on the nose, complicated by cured meat and candied violet. Deep and sweet in the mouth, with powerful but finely etched red berry and cherry flavors and a strong oak accent. This gained in aromatic complexity with air, picking up brighter strawberry and redcurrant qualities, with the oak tones receding into the background. The finish is strikingly sappy and extremely long. This needs to be stashed away for a while still.

Mid crimson with very pale rim. Cream of mushroom soup on the nose. Lovely rich and broad and pretty exciting. Hint of marmite, much more exciting and vital than the 2002.
