($115; a blend of 72% cabernet sauvignon, 16% merlot, 10% cabernet franc and 2% petit verdot; this had just been racked, for only the second time) Saturated medium ruby. Sappy aromas of black raspberry, blueberry, blackberry, violet, tar and minerals. Superconcentrated, layered, deep flavors of blackberry, raspberry, cassis and licorice; offers an uncanny chewiness of texture. As powerful as this is, it's also suave and seamless, with a total absence of rough edges. There are hints of espresso and forest floor, but this very broad, primary wine will need time to develop more nuance. Finishes with a major tannic spine and superb subtle persistence. This wine spent 54 days on its skins.

A spectacular Knight's Valley proprietary red wine from Peter Michael, the 2001 Les Pavots performed brilliantly in the horizontal tasting I did in Napa Valley in late May. Its dense opaque blue/purple color is accompanied by notes of graphite, charcoal, burning embers, creme de cassis, licorice and chocolate fudge. Opulent and full-bodied with sweet tannin as well as low acidity, it is just beginning to strut its stuff and reveal secondary nuances. Approachable now, this full-bodied, multi-dimensional wine should continue to drink well for another two decades plus.

Gorgeous, offering layers of rich, plush, dark berry, plum, blackberry, kirsch and fig paste, woven together with green olive and melted licorice. Full-blown, yet for all its depth and density it glides along on a smooth, tapered finish. Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. 2001 California Cabernet blind retrospective (June 2011). Drink now through 2020. 1,853 cases made.'J.L.

Les Pavots Vineyard was planted in 1989 and sits at elevations ranging between 1,300 and 1,500 feet above sea level. The vineyard faces generally toward the south. Vines are planted on 23 acres. 18 of those acres have Cabernet while the remaining five acres grow Merlot (3 acres) and Franc (2 acres). The 2001?s assemblage consists of 72% Cabernet, 16% Merlot, 10% Franc, and 2% Petit Verdot. The grapes received a four day cold soak before being fermented on their wild yeasts. The wine aged for 14 months in French oak before being bottled without fining or filtration. The 2001 Les Pavots is the most impressive red wine I have tasted from Peter Michael. It is black as night with a huge, sappy, and toasty nose of blackberry, oak, and vanilla spice. Enormous in the mouth with seemingly undying waves of fruit to go along with polished and cascading tannin. There is plenty of acid to handle the intensity.

About This Producer

Peter Michael's estate vineyards (founded in 1982) are what make his wines truly exceptional. Sugarloaf Ranch sits high above Knights Valley in eastern Sonoma County, and from its rocky volcanic soil come Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Cabernet Franc. The Alexander Mountain Estate Vineyard, above Alexander Valley, provides additional Chardonnay. All Peter Michael wines are site-driven single vineyard bottlings, whether from the estate or the limited sourced appellations. The line-up of estate wines is supplemented by a Pinot Noir from Pisoni Vineyard called "Le Moulin Rouge."
