($55) Good deep red-ruby. Deeper, more complex nose combines red berry liqueur, tobacco, smoke, minerals, leather and wild herbs. Round and pliant but also fresh and precise, with excellent vibrancy and grip. Captivating, exotic hints of blood orange, nectarine and orange peel. Very individual and not at all overdone. Elegantly styled for Priorat wine, finishing with very suave tannins and impressive subtle persistence.

This unfiltered blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Grenache, Syrah, Merlot, and Carignan, aged for 14 months in new French oak, and bottled unfiltered, boasts a deep purple color along with a pure bouquet of raspberries, blueberries, wet stones, and toasty, subtle vanillin. Medium-bodied with outstanding concentration, impressive elegance, and a nice texture, this tight but promising 2001 should hit its prime in 2-4 years, and last for 12-15.

Powerful, rich with extract and tannins, offering ripe fruit flavors of plum and dried cherry that mingle with spicy oak and notes of wild herb. More muscular than expressive, but should open with food. 200 cases imported.

About This Producer

Central to the "re-birth" of Priorat that began in the 1980s, Costers del Siurana was established in 1987 by the Pastrana Jarque family with the mission of re-building the vineyards and reputation of the region. Terraces were re-constructed, vineyards revived and replanted, and new varietals were introduced to supplement the existing old vine Garnacha, Tempranillo, and Carinena. The wines - Clos de l'Obac, Miserere, and Dolc de l'Obac - are estate grown and produced, aged in French oak, and bottled unfiltered.
