($64-$100) Bright ruby-red. Vibrant, complex aromas of cassis, graphite, eucalyptus and tobacco. Fat and sweet but shapely, with impressive density and underlying structure. Flavors of plum, mint, roasted nuts and sweet oak. Fairly full for young Cos, but quite suave. Finishes with firm but smooth tannins and excellent grip. Better than the 2000.

Dark crimson. Polished, exotic nose. Sweet and rich and SO unlike Montrose, it’s almost a joke! But it’s much more attractive and juicier than Montrose… real life here. Polish without excess sweetness.

A beautiful effort, the 2001 Cos d'Estournel (65% Cabernet Sauvignon and 35% Merlot) exhibits a poised, noble bouquet of black currants, cedar, spice box, and licorice. A hint of truffles emerges as it sits in the glass. Medium-bodied with sweet fruit (mostly black) and nicely integrated wood, it builds incrementally in the mouth, ending with a 50-second finish. Drink this stylish, restrained yet substantial claret over the next 15+ years.

Wonderful spice and currant aromas to this young wine. Full-bodied, with super well-integrated, refined tannins. Long caressing finish. This is very, very silky. Just like from barrel. Cos is on top of it now. 17,705 cases made.

One of the best 2001 Cos d'Estournel I have tasted. It is absolutely mature, no tanin and suberb. Enjoy!

Seems to be hitting its peak. Well balanced, smooth tannins, drinking beautifully. Classical Cos, just as it should be...

Delicious. Dark purple color followed by aromas of blueberry on the nose. Dark ripe fruit on the palate with cedar. Long finish. This is evolving nicely, and resembles Pavie.

About This Producer

Classified as a Second Growth Bordeaux estate, Chateau Cos d'Estournel is without doubt, one of the top producers in the St. Estephe appellation, producing complex and intense, full-bodied wines. The chateau is often referred to as "super second," meaning that it produces wines at a quality nearing that of the First Growth houses. Cos d'Estournel wines contain a large amount of Merlot (40%), one of the highest percentages in the region, in fact; this gives the wines their wonderful fleshy, chewy texture. The chateau itself is a very unusual pagoda style building which was built by the 19th century owner Louis-Gaspard d'Estournel. The building is featured on the bottle label, making it easy to spot in the Bordeaux section. The estate also produces a second wine called Les Pagodes de Cos.
