($210) Medium ruby. Dark aromas of blackcurrant, licorice, meat and chocolate, with a violety topnote and a whiff of band aid. Then surprisingly narrow in the mid-palate, with black fruit and licorice flavors showing modest depth and personality. With only limited stuffing, this turns a bit dry on the back. I've heard multiple versions of what went wrong with this wine, but what seems clear is that a brettanomyces problem required the wine to be filtered, and the filtration robbed the wine of much of its richness and length.

The chunky-styled 2001 does not possess the charm, complexity or sweet, pure blueberry and black fruits found in Bryant's wines since the early 1990s. It reveals a hint of new saddle leather, but the aromatics are largely restrained and need to be coaxed from the glass. The wine is full-bodied and concentrated, and by itself, is probably a better wine than my rating would suggest. However, in the company of other top 2001s, it suffers. It has 15 or more years of life remaining, but I would opt for drinking it early on since it is difficult to say what might emerge in the aromatics.

Pretty aromas of currants and blackberries, with hints of fresh acidity. Medium- to full-bodied, with currant and vanilla character. Slightly alcoholic. But rich. Still coming together in the bottle.

The 2001 is 100% Cabernet Sauvignon. Purple/red hued wine with lots of thin moderately pigmented legs. A lightly perfumed nose of black truffle oil, some game, slight menthol, and sweet plum with a touch of cream and graham cracker. The subdued but still enjoyable nose gives way on the palate. Simply put, this wine is thin with more acidity and tannin then the meager fruit concentration can handle. A Bryant Family Cabernet Sauvignon in name only. This wine should never have been released under the "grand vin" label. Undoubtedly, the greatest disappointment of Napa Valley?s superlative 2001 vintage.

About This Producer

Located high above Lake Hennessy, the vineyards which supply this outstanding expression of Napa's bounty are some of the few influenced by the moderating influence of a relatively large body of water. At 1,500-feet, the high altitude of the Pritchard Hill area also serves to produce low yields of premium grapes that provide the dense, concentrated, black fruit aspect of this enormously complex 100% Cabernet Sauvignon. Founded in 1987 by Don and Barbara Bryant, the wines were originally made by Helen Turley. The current winemaker is Helen Keplinger with Michelle Edwards consulting.
