($175; sold in a six-bottle case with the 2001 St. Eden and Melbury) Saturated medium ruby. Superripe aromas of currant, minerals and exotic herbs, with suggestions of date and iodine. Sappy and superconcentrated, with lush but delineated flavors of black raspberry, bitter cherry and tobacco. Mounts slowly and impressively on the back half, with the wine's extremely fine tannins buried in fruit.

The 2001 Cabernet Sauvignon Melbury (a dead ringer for Pauillac) has an opaque blue/purple color and an extraordinarily sweet nose of charcoal, lead pencil shavings, cedar wood, black currants, licorice and spice box. Full-bodied, with great intensity, purity and texture, this is a wonderfully dense, full-throttle wine that is still an adolescent and likely to stay one for at least another 5-7 years. Look for it to age gracefully well past 20-30+ years.

Only ever so slightly starting to unfold from its tannic slumber; this is still dense and chewy, but offering more depth to the blackberry, black licorice, roasted herb and game flavors and ending with a solid wall of tannin that lets the fruit seep through. 2001 California Cabernet blind retrospective (June 2011). Drink now through 2025. 700 cases made.

About This Producer

In his ongoing quest to produce world class wine in the tradition of 1st Growth Bordeaux, Bill Harlan - of Harlan Estate fame - started Bond to create single vineyard wines from sources meeting his high growing standards. Winemaker Robert Levy produces five vineyard designate wines: Melbury, St. Eden, Vecina, Pluribus and Quella, as well as a blend called The Matriarch. Levy's goal is for each wine to take on the unique expression of its vineyard site and Bill Harlan's ultimate plan is to produce wines from a total of 6 unique vineyards. The wines are known for their lush, deeply concentrated flavors, and their elegance and finesse, which Bill and Robert feel define them as the "Grand Crus" of Napa. Fewer than 1,500 cases of the Matriarch, and between 400 and 700 cases of the vineyard designates are produced annually.
