($60) Deep red-ruby color. Dark berries, cola, licorice and a meaty nuance on the nose. Rich, broad and concentrated, with rather low-toned flavors of dark fruits, sassafras, earth and smoke. Finishes with substantial dusty tannins and notes of leather, mocha and meat. This should be ideal served with roasted meats. Cortonesi's 2001 Brunello di Montalcino is an intense effort packed with super-ripe vibrant dark fruit in a rich, concentrated style with outstanding persistence on the palate and great overall balance, although it finishes a bit hot. Today the tannins are a bit prominent but a few years of cellaring should do the trick.

Aromas of blackberry, spices and dried mushrooms follow through to a full-bodied palate, with big velvety tannins and a long finish. This is powerful and layered. Big, juicy wine.
