($62) Good full red-ruby. Mellow aromas of black raspberry, game, smoke and truffle. Sweeter, fatter and lusher than the Clone 4, with an impressively plump middle and very good depth. A mineral note contributes firmness and nuance. Accessible already, but structured to age for a decade or more.

Denser, richer and even fuller-bodied, the deep ruby/purple-tinged 2001 Cabernet Sauvignon West Block reveals more black fruits along with incense, fruitcake and earthy notes. Give it another 1-2 years of cellaring and consume it over the following 10-12 years.

About This Producer

Former Beringer Executive Tor Kenward launched his brand in the early 2000s and soon tapped Jeff Ames, the German-born, Memphis-raised protege of Thomas Brown to be his winemaker. Concentrating on red Rhone varieties (bottled under his Rock label) as well as Cabernet Sauvignon and Chardonnay (under TOR) from single vineyard sites, the wines have swiftly gained critically high acclaim. Production for any one wine rarely exceeds 200 cases.
