(includes 15% cabernet franc) Good full ruby. Superripe aromas of blackcurrant syrup, chocolate, tar and fruit cake. Dense, tarry and sweet, with cassis, licorice and fruit cake flavors. The building tannins are substantial and broad but not at all dry. Already delicious, but has the spine to develop in bottle for a decade or more. Rudd's 2001s were vinified by David Ramey but finished by Charles Thomas, who assumed winemaking responsibilities here in the spring of 2002.

Clean, pure Cabernet, little tannin left in this wine so it has an easy, silky texture. That being said the tannin sometimes, to me at least, assists in extending the finish a little longer and this was noticeable here. Still great with filet mignon and some braised broccolini.
Color: Youthful deep red with claret edges
Nose: Chocolate, cassis,and blackberries, a touch of tobacco leaf
Palate: Black cherry, chocolate, cassis, and sweet oak mesh together to provide a great fruit assault, but little acidity and tannin keep it from really carrying through to a strong finish.
