Notes of roasted herbs, damp earth, licorice, black currants, sweet cherries and a Provencal-like garrigue character emerge from the dense, full-bodied, masculine 2001 Rubicon. This big, deep red still has some tannins to shed, but it is revealing considerable complexity as well as pleasure. It should hit its prime in another 4-5 years and last for two decades.

Dark, smooth, rich and complex, with a silky texture leading to a core of ripe plum, black cherry, smoky oak and wild berry flavors, finishing with a long, intricate aftertaste. This is a wine that grows on you. 5,230 cases made.

Dark black cherry hued with amorphous yet concentrated sweet fruit and toasty oak aromas. Quite full and rich in the mouth but without being over the top. Nice acidity. It ends quite long while tasting mainly of finely crafted oak. It is simple now but has the power to withstand cellaring ? with time I forecast it will develop some complexity to go along with its strength.

About This Producer

The Rubicon Estate Winery (formerly Niebaum-Coppola Winery and Inglenook Winery) is located in Rutherford, California in the heart of Napa Valley. The winery sits on a portion of the historic Napa property first acquired in 1879 by Finnish Sea Captain Gustave Niebaum, founder of the Inglenook Winery.

In 1975, Francis Ford Coppola and his wife Eleanor purchased Niebaum's Victorian home, along with 120 acres of surrounding vineyards. In 1995, Coppola reunited the two original Inglenook parcels by purchasing the grand Inglenook chateau and surrounding vineyards (neighboring vineyards now include Heitz Wine Cellars Martha's Vineyard and Beaulieu Vineyard Georges de Latour). The winery underwent a name change in early 2006, and is now known as Rubicon Estate.
