More Vintages and Sizes of Pride Mountain - Sangiovese:
International Wine Cellar
Author: Stephen Tanzer
Issue: Issue 108
($55; 15% alcohol; includes 24% cabernet sauvignon) Saturated medium ruby. Rather porty aromas of wild berry jelly, dark chocolate, tobacco, licorice and roasted nuts. Superripe, glyceral-rich and sweet, with port-like chocolatey surmaturite and a very supple texture. Finishes with huge but ripe tannins. A very rich wine made from late-picked grapes, but not oxidized. Still, this is not my favorite style of sangiovese.

The greatest northern California Sangiovese, the 2001 Sangiovese blows away its competition. Strawberry jam, tobacco leaf, plum, and fig characteristics skip and hop to the beat of a large orchestra in this bottle that is available only in 500 ml formats. Drink this knock-out 2001 over the next 5-7 years. It will make anyone believe that Sangiovese as well as Merlot are not always the great red wine rip offs of California.
