($150; bottled two weeks before my tasting) Deep ruby. Wild aromas of black fruits, leather, violet, meat, fruit cake and pungent oak, with the liqueur-like ripeness displayed by the 2001 Insignia. Superripe, fat and sweet, with slightly roasted aromas of black fruits, leather, meat and fruit cake. Compared to the more minerally Insignia, this gives an impression of higher pH and doesn't show quite the same clarity of flavor. My sample reminded me a bit of Chateauneuf du Pape. The tannins are not as fine as those of the Insignia.

From a steep eastern hillside vineyard in Oakville, the excruciatingly youthful, intense 2001 Cabernet Sauvignon Backus Vineyard possesses an opaque purple color (that resembles a barrel sample rather than a 10-year old wine) as well as an extraordinary perfume of raspberry jam, creme de cassis, acacia flowers and crushed rocks. Full-bodied with magnificent concentration, purity and texture, this modern day legend should still be drinking beautifully in 2035.

Medium to dark red with chocolate, toast, cherry, and caramel scents. This wine's nose reminds me of another famed Oakville Cabernet - Screaming Eagle. Moderate to heavy tannin with excellent mouthwatering acidity. Tannins endure for longer than they should so I expect this wine will always be marked with a tannic bite. Nice chocolate flavor paired with sweet cherry overtones. Lacks a bit of fruit concentration but still this is a very nice if very expensive Cabernet from the heart of the Napa Valley. 100% Cabernet aged for 23 months in new French oak prior to bottling.
