($70) Pineapple, grapefruit and tangerine scents, complicated by flowers and subtle oak. Dense and chewy in the mouth, with a distinctly mentholated aspect. Amazingly penetrating for a wine with 14.8% alcohol. But this is bone-dry, with less than one gram per liter residual sugar. Powerful and very long on the aftertaste. Perhaps more structured than the equally rich 2000.

There are 10,000 bottles of the luxury cuvee, the 2001 Condrieu La Doriane. One of the appellation's most distinctive and complex offerings, it offers up a fragrant perfume of incense, smoke, honeysuckle, and jammy white fruits. Unctuously-textured and full-bodied, with tremendous intensity, it should be drunk over the next 1-2 years, although past vintages have held up better in bottle than I predicted. Nevertheless, I prefer these whites in their youth.

Supple white in a buttery style, with grilled pineapple and toasted oak flavors. Well-made, full-bodied and spicy, a food wine as well as an aperitif wine. Fresh finish, with good acidity.

About This Producer

Marcel Guigal - the so-called "pivot" of the Cote-Rotie appellation - is both an owner and negociant, and vinifies over 40% of all Cote-Rotie. His father, Etienne, started out quite modestly in 1946, and over the next decades the company has grown to encompass all that is best in the Rhone Valley. Not only known for the massive hits in Hermitage and Cote-Rotie, the Guigal name is synonymous with quality all along the scale, from the humble Cotes-du-Rhone to the Big Three - La Landonne, La Mouline and La Turque.
